This area is now endangered due to "Fracking" or using sand and chemicals to assist oil extraction.  Sand dunes in this area used to be more of a nuisance than anything.  Now they are considered valuable to the new process of obtaining crude oil.  Sand dune locations are also micro ecosystems to various but specific species.  So, there is some push back in environmental concerns.  In fact, due to wind exposure from time to time, historical artifacts have been revealed that were under the sands darkness for hundreds of years.  Of course this enrages the oil industry...
